Who doesn’t like a bit of Grindcore, or for that matter Goregrind? With the genre evolving into a comical albeit enjoyable myriad of oddities that has birthed the antics of such festivals as Obscene Extreme there is an clear party vibe about the genre. Bringing us the party today are the Portuguese wild beasts Serrabulho who bring their follow up to 2015’s Star Whores entitled Porntugal. The album is put out through the ever reliable and ever eclectic Rotten Roll Rex, a label who truly bring the fringes of Grind and Brutal Death Metal to life.
Opening this album is the totally deranged She Drinks Milk a hilarious mixture of Cybergrind, Goregrind, dare I say Childrens music and all sorts of other chaos. Quite honestly you have to hear it to believe it. If you’re accustomed to this brand of weird underground Grind then you’ll probably know what to expect but that never ceases to make it sound unique and full of surprises. Naturally the vocals are a mixture of more traditional Brutal Death Metal vocals in the vein of Lividity and toilet infused gutturals of the likes of Gut and Rompeprop, these vocals are probably best exhibited in Fecal Torpedo.
Pito Sem Penas continues the strange nature of Porntugal with its clean vocal sections that are reminiscent of Folk Metal. Soon enough these lead to Os Tintins Do Tintin another mental trip into the land of the sick through weird comical vocals and jolly Punk riffs that are distorted to a suitably Goregrind tone. Just when you thought it might clam down we have the increasingly silly BBC Wildlife with its jovial keyboard introduction followed by a chunky Goregrind infused center. Wading through more toilet themed repugnance we reach the flatulent intro of Tofu Au Cu before splashing into the urine stained water of filthy Grindcore below. As for Tomate Pelado, the closing track, words cannot even describe. All I have to say is Techno, bagpipes and donkeys, surely that’s enough to make you want to listen?
Porntugal is an unending journey of twists and turns that keep even the most seasoned listener on their feet. Serrabulho seem to have just one thing in mind, fun. This album brings the party to you, with so many strange influences each new listen offers up fresh material that makes for truly inspirational listening. These sorts of insane bands are pretty commonplace nowadays, especially with the internet but nevertheless when they are given a voice it just adds to the outlandish hilarity.
